Ethan joined our little gym way back in May of 2013; Danielle joined us a year later. They’ve been an integral part of our community from the get-go, and have achieved a LOT of personal results.
1. Give us a little background on yourself, as much or as little as you’d like to share (age, where you’re from, what you do for a “living”, etc.).
I’m originally from New Jersey (Danielle’s narrating) and Ethan’s from Philadelphia. We met while we were sophomores at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We still debate what actual day we met. I know we met on a Friday, but Ethan doesn’t remember and thinks we met the next day. Apparently, I’m very memorable.
We moved to San Diego 6.5 years ago when Ethan joined the Navy. He put in his four years and now he’s a defense contractor at SPAWAR. I’m a writer and designer at Intuit TurboTax.
2. What hobbies or interests (other than CrossFit) do you have?
Leo, our mini poodle rescue, is the center of our life. We adopted him 4 years ago and can’t imagine life without him. Ethan writes a pretty hilarious blog reviewing California burritos. Check it out at burritosofsandiego.com. We also love playing trivia in bars around the neighborhood. If you’re good at trivia, let us know. We can always use more smart friends to help us out. 😉
3. What got you interested in CrossFit? Why do you do it (i.e., what are your health goals)?
Ethan first heard about Crossfit from his drill instructors at OCS. He started doing it on his own in regular gyms, but didn’t join a gym until he joined CFHC 2.5 years ago. Until recently, I absolutely never exercised and I was definitely intimidated by Crossfit. After doing Zumba and bootcamp classes for a while, I started coming to the free Saturday WODs with Ethan and really enjoyed it. I loved that everyone at the gym seemed to be friends with each other and how helpful and friendly the coaches were. It took me a while, but I finally joined them gym after 4-5 months of only doing the free WODs.
4. What’s your favorite CrossFit exercise? What’s your least favorite?
Ethan’s favorite movement is the deadlift. His least favorite is the overhead walking lunch. My favorites are squat cleans and burpees. My least favorite is bench press.
5. What do you like the most about being a member at CrossFit Hillcrest?
We love all the friends we’ve made since joining the gym. All of our best friends in San Diego are somehow connected to CrossFit Hillcrest. I also love that the gym cemented my dedication to being healthy and fit. I’m like a different person now and can’t imagine life without our gym.
6. Any other comments you’d like to share with our members?
I guess I’d like to apologize for all the crazy ideas Ethan shares at the gym. Let’s just be thankful that Mike and the coaches aren’t insane enough to program most of Ethan’s WOD ideas.
